Regarding the “good mix” thing, I think I know what people are getting at. At least, I thought something along those lines, and I know what I was getting at. Someone who’s dad was a black dentist from Chelsea and who’s mother was a white accountant from Sussex might be able to claim genetic exoticism, but genetic exoticism (I claim) isn’t very interesting to talk about at parties.

Whereas you have Jamaican, Polish, and Croatian in your immediate family. If you’ve just met someone at a party, and that’s pretty much all they know about you beyond some basic introductions, that immediately invites questions: where did you grow up? Have you spent time with grandparents in far-off lands? What sort of culinary traditions have you inherited from your parents and grandparents? Were you raised with philisophical or regligious views that are (from the perspective of an average Brit) exotic in some way?

Basically, I claim that being a cultural mongrel is much more interesting than being a genetic one. I believe “good” is a clumsy way for people to say “hey, that’s fascinating, I’d like to talk about that”.
