I was really enjoying your boat saga (felt vindicated on the coffee part !!), but I busted out laughing when I got to "Cirrhosis of the River". Life is an amazing place, isn't it? Truth, much stranger than fiction.

Smooth sailing, skipper -

I would LOVE to sail in Alaska. Also along the East Coast.

Wine and cheese - all one needs on a boat. Oh, bacon too.

And I've still not been sailing this year. Maybe at Easter.

Fair winds to you!

I used to know someone with the same boat which I sailed all the time when I live in Alaska. Now I'm in New York and it cost as much as a flat to rent a birth in this gods damn city. If I could just beach a boat on the bank of the Hudson though I would do that and be sailing every night and day.

In Alaska we didn't have mud though, just big, solid rock berms. Once we sailed on a large wave into the middle of one. When the wave went down we landed with a bump on the keal. Had to wait for about six hour for the tide to go out and come back in enough for us to mooter off... We broke out the wine cheese and crackers and had a grand old time.

1. Will b looking out for Jesus in Emsworth. 2. You get to have tea when you sail - I am definately doing something wrong. 3. I know that mudbank. 4. Will wave from 'Kitty' once fair weather sailing resumes in April!!

Now look here, I don’t know why I can’t get these effing comments to thread properly, but I’ll persevere & in the meantime answer you lovely commenters here.

Artsmonkey – I love me a Cornish lugger & will look out for you. I’ll be the one on the mudbank having a cup of tea. Ahem.

Fatherjack – That’s a great story! I have some disturbing images in my head now, though.

Califmom – I’ll take you out for a wee sail if you ever come visit the UK.

She looks much happier in the water, I must say. A bit less like a beached whale.

As a water-loving person who grew up in a land-locked, camping family, I envy your choice of recreation.

I managed to get warned away from a Royal Naval 'boat' a long time ago. Apparently, me in my Speedos on a life saving board were a significant threat to a 28,000 tonne, 175 metre long ship. (RFA Argus it was). We paddled 2 miles out into St Ives bay to get a closer look and had paddled around the back of it when a chappie on a loud-hailer enquired as to whether we would prefer to paddle back to land or suffer some high velocity lead poisoning... We paddled.

Oh how those old boys laughed in the pub that night!! Isn't Emsworth glorious, we'll look out for you when we next steal Father-in-laws Cornish lugger for a joyride - Sadly, we're never allowed out of site of land due to our hilarious navigational skills.
